Conscious Parenting: What is it and Why Bother?

What does the term conscious parenting mean to you? To me it means parenting with awareness of my actions and with the ability to truly see my children for who they are. It includes the ability to stay present with my kids, especially when my emotions are running high. Conscious parenting is a state of mind that I achieve sometimes, and completely neglect at other times. When I am at my most conscious as a parent, the kids and I are most connected and happy. When I am parenting unconsciously, there is lots of disconnect between us.

Why bother to become more conscious as a parent? Simply put, if you don’t bother, you won’t know what affect you are having on your kids. Think about the ways your parents fell short in their parenting of you. If they had been conscious of what they were doing, and of how to change, do you think they would have continued to behave that way? Conscious parenting is great parenting, and we all want to be great parents.

I am interviewing Phil Johncock this month on my teleseminar series to find out more about how to parent more consciously. Phil has co-lead a parenting course with Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks, who along with her husband Gay, has written the best-selling book Conscious Paernting . Phil promises to bring a sometimes humorous approach to our questions on conscious parenting!

To great, conscious, parenting!
